The olive leaf extract is a non-toxic product however there are some minor side effects that are associated with its use. One effect that has been noted is that it may make certain antibiotics inactive. You should consult with your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any of these products, to ensure that there are no ill reactions.
It is also known to cause a Herxheimer's reaction that result of it killing off too many pathogens too rapidly. This then results in the individual experiencing flu like feelings or even the effect of an allergic attack. This can result in the individual feeling much better than they were before taking the olive leaf extract.
If an individual knows they are at risk for Herxheimer, then they should take a smaller dose and then gradually build it up over time.
Other side effects are the amino acids such as glycine, lysine, histadine, and cysteine that can interfere with the action of the olive leaf extract.

There has no proper research that has been done with olive leaf extract and pregnancy. As a result pregnant or nursing mothers should consult with their physician or medical practitioner if they plan on taking this product.
Olive Leaf Extract & Diabetes Effects
If you take insulin or other types of medication that is used to control your diabetes then you should stay away from using olive leaf extract. It is known to reduce blood sugar levels unpredictably. It may also increase blood-sugar lowering effects of drugs or herbals. This could then result in the person having hypoglycemia. Symptoms of low blood sugar include shakiness, sweating, confusion, distorted speech, and loss of muscle control. If not corrected, low blood sugar can lead to unconsciousness and even death.
Olive Leaf Extract & High Blood Pressure Effects
Olive leaf extract can lower blood pressure in various different methods. This can include the widening of blood vessels. It can interact with drugs that are used to lower blood pressure and have a negative effect. It may also result in hypotension which can lead to confusion, blurred vision, dizziness and fainting.
